Set two world records in the 200m back and 400m medley relay and a Championship record in the 100m back en route to winning three golds at Short Course World Championships; also took fourth in the 50m back … triple gold medalist at the Olympic Games, winning 100m and 200m back (Olympic record), and leading off world record-breaking 400m medley relay in world record time … broke the meet record in the 100m back and broke the world record in the 200m back at the Olympic Trials en route to qualifying for his second Olympic team … won his second NCAA title, taking the 200m back in world record time; also was third in the 100m back.

In 2003
Won gold in the 100m back, 200m back (both in Championships record-time) and the 400m medley relay, breaking the world record in the relay at the FINA World Championships; also won silver on the American record-setting 800m free relay and was eighth in the 50m back … won the 200m back and was third in the 100m back as well as leading off the 400m medley relay that broke the U.S. Open record at the Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool … broke the American record in the 200y back becoming the first person to swim it under 1:40, winning his first NCAA title; also was second in the 100y back at the NCAA Championships.

In 2002
Won three gold medals at Pan Pacific Championships, earning the 100m and 200m back titles as well as leading the 400m medley relay to a world record … won the 100m and 200m back at the P66 Summer Nationals … broke world record to win gold in 200m back and on 400m medley relay (WR) and was silver medalist in 100m back at Short Course World Championships … set his first world record, winning the 200m back at the P66 Spring Nationals (1:55.15); also won the 100m back and placed sixth in the 200m free.

In 2001
Won his first World Championship title in the 200m back … won 100m and 200m back at P66 Spring Nationals, breaking U.S. Open record in 200.
